I always use the speech processor and I use the settings below: TX BPF = 200-2800 (try 400-2600 for DX pileup) MIC GAIN = 35 (40 to 45 if you speak softly) AMC = 65 +/-. If I were looking to buy today, I certainly think the FT-710 would offer excellent value compared to either the FTDX-10 or the IC-7300. There have been several firmware updates with the FT-710 that have addressed initial release bugs and current pricing would make it a very tempting holiday gift for someone. Any radio in the top 20 is going to be good, but getting a radio in the top 4 is a pretty good thing! Actually hybrid SDR's are better than pure SDR's as demonstrated with the 7300, the FT DX 10 handles better noisy environment and doesn't get overloaded when the 7300 does because of that hybrid arquitecture..
